I sort of took it to be a scanner device with little antenna that move in order to show how much of something it detects, like the proximity of aliens for example, but a grabbything-pickaxe sounds really useful.
It is an alien detector, but entertaining the “pinch-ax” idea: Is pinch-ax astronaut switching the device from ax mode to pinch mode to try to cheer his partner up? Is pinching his spacesuit going to rupture it? Would this kill him sooner than the alien would, and if so, is that preferable?
I like that little space pickaxe that can turn into a pinchymajig.

I figured he picked a rock out of the ground and he was preparing to pick it up, but we didn’t see that in a panel because it’s not that important.
