On first read, I thought that cylinder-with-a-dome thing was a mine the tank was headed to being blown up by (or possibly would slip on the banana forward onto), but from the context of the text, I think it’s actually Thomas Jefferson’s bunker place? In which case, they met disaster surprisingly close to safety.
