Looks like Duke Paramount will be safe from being turned into primordial ooze, as you utter phones, not phonemes :)
(Phones are sounds; phonemes are abstract units pertinent to a given language. Apologies for this utterly pointless nitpick, but I don’t get the opportunity to be a pedant about phonology in webcomics comment sections very often. As recompense, I’d like to submit that anyone trying to pull this smug little observation can easily be shut down by pointing out that by the same token, it also wouldn’t be possible to utter *words* as they are abstract units as well.)
If this comic is setting up the return of the Seahorse Guardian, I am very much looking forward to it.
Why do I suddenly want to drink an orange?
I think Giuseppe should try and step outside the stereotypes, become his own person. For the sake of everyone else, if for no other reason.
I do know how he feels..
Nar pretty sure that means that phonemes are also phones, so.. it’s like you could say ‘one more letter’ or ‘one more syllable’ and your meaning would approximately be the same. any further language-units will not be tolerated.
Man I always wondered who maintained those traps.
Well… yeah, the message of “any further language-units will not be tolerated” is clearly communicated. And a phoneme becomes a phone by being uttered. But it is possible to come up with some edge case like a tongue click — to English speakers it’s just a sound, but in other languages, it could be part of a word. If I go “tsk!” at Chimneyfoot, do I get the retro-evolution treatment for uttering a phoneme, I guess is what I’m asking.
NAR: Man, it’s been a long time since linguistics class! But as Chim is a mathematician and not a grammarian, I think “phoneme” passes muster.
(As a former professional copy editor, I appreciate pedantic observations like this! But as a guy whose writing is 90% cartoon character dialogue these days, I’ve learned to be more lenient.)
Nahtmmm: All I can say is that orange is but one of five delicious flavors in SPLASH! fruit juice cocktail.
Bearlover: He should, but at his core, he is truly a bastion of anti-Asian sentiment that the West needs eliminate.
Cold: I always figured the real takeaway from Raiders of the Lost Ark was the resilience of Incan engineering, but then I read a community college catalog.
