Fun fact: For the first four panels, I hand-colored all the black spots in with ink (and paint for the larger parts; I already go through ink at an alarming rate). Then it occurred to me that I could have simply done that in Photoshop. I had to seriously ask myself why I didn’t just ‘shop it, since I normally don’t ink anything much larger than Dave’s hat, but I found I had no answer.
Anyway, the only black I Photoshopped into this one is the doorway.
I find it very satisfying to color stuff with black ink by hand, chiseling away at the white space, landscaping the small self-contained reality of the page. I find Photoshop (or GIMP in my case) just doesn’t have the same impact, though it’s way more forgiving if you make mistakes. Then again, some mistakes, that you can’t easily fix, lead to some interesting places.
Also it’s weird how the empty space of paper is white, but the empty space of space is black. Empty, empty, empty.. what a strange word.
I enjoy writing numbers.. I’m weird, but it feels like putting off the hard work of drawing.
I like this Plitz character. I like how he limbos right out of windows. I bet seeing him unfurl his wings after holding htem close to his body to avoid colliding with the window frame was a sight to behold, but only YOU get to see secret skirt steak like that.
I know somehow who recently attempted to do the white of a word balloon by filling everything in but the letters in black ink, then turning it photonegative digitally. This person is a little bit mad, but I know who, I’m going to next time I need a presidential pardon from the mayor.
Do you have any SYMBOLISM?
Fun headcanon fact: “Autodefenestrate” is Joobi Plitz’s both preferred course of retreat and a favorite safe word.
